Time and time again the problem with a small businesses is the Owner, The Managing Director. So many times I have worked with or for companies that have an owner that just doesn’t understand business and therefore lacks the acumen required to run one. Not only that, they also lack basic common sense. Alot of people that decide to own businesses are egotistical, strong, autocractic decision makers. What this sadly means often with this personality type is that do not listen to their staff.
When I have worked for other people I have always ensured I was very open and honest. Maybe too honest. I have always said my piece… No matter what the possible consequence. Let’s face it I got fired quite alot and have had ALOT more jobs than most. However, the only regrets I have is not having told some more coworkers/bosses exactly what I thought more often!
Listen to me… Do not take any shit from a business owner like this. Don’t ever let them put you down and if they do address it right on the spot. Sometimes in business you need to show your teeth and let them know that you also have a bite.
In business you get systematic issues that if not handled swiftly can destory a business. The directors ability to spot the roadblock and conquer it in a timely manner is critical. There will often be 1-5 really pressing issues that need to be addressed. As a director you need to not aviod these issues by being stubborn. Don’t always try to be the smartest one in the room, just listen to the person who is right. Being obstinate and pig-headed wastes valuable time and you are costing yourself success in the process.
